Clear Channel and Why Mainstream Radio Sucks!
Major Record Labels are now in a tough financial situation especially in
this generation.  CDs are not selling and if they are selling is not much
to cover their expenses.  Their payola budget has depleted and they
are now reverting to other means in getting their artist played on the
radio.
Many mainstream radio stations that have the format of Urban, Pop, Hip Hop,
Country, Rock and Latin all proclaim they play the top 40.  What is the TOP 40
exactly?

Well, The Top 40 is actually taken from the Billboard Charting System.  Billboard is
the organization that charts the bestselling albums and singles.  When a consumer
purchases an album it is scanned at the retail store using the Universal Product
Code Aka UPC barcode.  Soundscan, the company that collects the data submits
those reports to Billboard.  Billboard Magazine and other companies generate
charts and make important decisions based on the data that was collected by
Soundscan.  You know, the top dogs of the record labels like producers, managers
and promoters all must check to see if the artist is selling in the stores.

Billboard also collects data from electronic download sales from iTUNES and other
websites that are selling music downloads.  Billboard has several charts including
Top 200 albums, Top 100 Singles R&B, Top Country, Top Rap etc etc etc.

So, if you are an artist whether Rap, R&B, Country etc, according to the radio
industry you must be in the Top 40s in order to get airplay on the radio.  What a
shame if you are an independent artist selling your CDs at live shows.  Those CDs
were not scanned and they are unaccounted for.  Billboard and Soundscan are not
aware you sold millions of CDs at your live show.

But, is it really true about the Top 40?  In other words, is mainstream radio speaking
the truth that they claim to play the Billboard Top 40?

Let’s take Marc Anthony for example who recorded the song “El Cantante” originally
recorded by a real Salsero and the king of all soneros, Hector Lavoe.  Anthony’s
song received much airplay and many spins on Latin mainstream radio stations.
Strangely, when the song debuted on hundreds of radio stations, the soundtrack
nor the blockbuster film “El Cantante” was not publicly released.  I checked iTUNES
and other companies to see if the song was available for download and sure
enough, it was not.

I then checked the beautiful and wonderful Billboard Charts and what did I find?
Nothing! Marc Anthony’s El Cantante song was nowhere to be found in the charts.  I
checked every week for 4 weeks.  I even checked the Rap and Country charts just
in case Billboard accidentally charted the song on the wrong chart.

So why on earth is Marc Anthony’s song “El Cantante” getting so much airplay on
hundreds of radio stations if it was nowhere to be found on the Billboard Top 40s,
Top 100, Top 200?  Also, the album or movie was not released.

I called clear channel and spoke with a representative.  He explained that Marc
Anthony is a Top 40 artist that had many hits and he was charted numerous of
times.  I sarcastically responded “Ohhh….I see.  The Top 40 is really the Top 40
artists and not the Top 40 songs.  Is that corrected?”  He paused and hesitated for
about 3 seconds before he answered the question and shockingly he said YES.
Unfortunately that is incorrect.  The Top 40 is actually the top bestselling song not
the top bestselling artist.  I wanted to correct him by directing him to the website of
Billboard which is the company clear channel gets their charting reports for their
radio stations but I wanted to play with his head and mess around with him.

I then asked him “So, if Aerosmith records a new song, they immediately get airplay
because they were a Top 40 artist historically speaking.  Likewise if Elvis Presley
comes back from the dead and records a new song, he will also get immediate
airplay because historically in the 1950s is was a top 40 artist correct?”  He paused
again and stated this may be correct but he is not sure.  I think that was the best
answer he gave.  He’s not sure but it might be correct.

The fact is, an artist is not charted.  Songs are charted.  If you as an artist recorded
a song in 2000 BC and the song was charted in the Top 40s and then you recorded
another song today, that new song must be charted in the Top 40’s in order to
receive airplay for that song.  That’s the way is suppose to work which is not the
case.

Ok, lets say this idiot is correct as he claimed established artist that made the Top
40 will always get airplay when they record a new song.  Really?  What about the
Pop Artist Mario Vasquez?  Do you remember Mario Vasquez?  He was the
American Idol that dropped out in season 4.  One year later after he quit American
Idol, he recorded a single called “Gallery” on Arista records.  This song received so
much airplay from 5 different radio stations in New York City.  Even Latin Radio
stations were spinning the hell out of that song.

Guess what I did?  I checked the retail stores to see if the single or the album was
available.  The sales clerks didn’t even know who Mario Vasquez was until I told
them he was the American Idol contestant that quit last year and it was all over the
news.  Now they remembered and frankly they were unaware he recorded a single
which was all over the airwaves.

So, Mario Vasquez debut album was not released in stores, there was no music
video as of yet, the single "Gallery" was not available for downloads on legal sites
like iTUNES or Rhapsody and he was nowhere to be found on the Billboard charts.
So why is he getting so much airplay?  Remember, according to the Clear Channel's
representative an established artist in the Top 40s gets airplay.  Was Mario Vazquez
ever historically charted in the Top 40?  NO, GALLERY WAS HIS FIRST SONG HE
EVER RECORDED YOU FREAKIN MORON.

It all boils down to this.  PAYOLA!  Plain and simple.  Watch the video on how payola
works and how it is killing the radio industry.  The Top 40 is a myth and it’s all
BULL-SHIT.  Sure, the Top 40’s maybe the bestselling song or album but Radio
stations will play whatever the major record labels submits to them and of coarse a
little something on the side and it's not candy.
