Hard Salsa Radio is a 24-Hour Internet
Radio Station and broadcasting on
WHUT 91.9 FM in New York City. Hard
Salsa Radio on plays Hard Salsa, also
known as Salsa Dura including
Guaguanco, Son Montuno,
Afro-Cuban, Guajira, Descargas,
Charanga, Mozambique, Mambo,
Cha-Cha-Cha and Boogaloo (Bugalu).
Hard Salsa Radio plays 70% of Hard Salsa classics including many rare
artists that were not that popular in the 1960s and 1970s like Johnny
Sedes, Eddie Hernandez, Orquesta Libertad and others. Most of the
playlist on our station concentrates on other tunes our Latin Legends
recorded in the past. Sure you will hear Hector Lavoe’s tunes like “El
Cantante and El Pediodico De Ayer” played on Hard Salsa Radio but
very seldom because commercial radio is already playing it. But what
about those other tunes Lavoe recorded? There were hundreds of them
such as “Hacha Y Machete, Alejate” and many others that were equally
as good.
In addition in playing those tunes on Hard Salsa Radio, we can’t forget
the great Eastside Classics AKA Sweet Latin Soul and Boogaloo tunes
from Joe Bataan, Joe Cuba, Jimmy Sabater, Joe Acosta, Ralfi Pagan and
hundreds of others. Yes, we are known as Hard Salsa Radio but we can
not neglect on the playlist those great sexy Latin Soul songs like Joe
Bataan’s - Sad Girl, Ralfi Pagan’s - Make it with you and so forth.
Did you know Hard Salsa music was still being recorded in the 1980s, 90s
and in our generation including the USA, Puerto Rico and other
countries? In the 1980s and early 1990’s a new form of Salsa emerged
in the USA and Puerto Rico called “Salsa Romantica” also known as
Salsa Monga. Romantic Salsa as many call it was typically a softer
rhythm lacking in clave and swing. The majority of these tunes lacked
something that Hard Salsa fans missed and loved dearly, THE SOLO.
The Solo is the best climatic part of the Hard Salsa tune where the
musician takes off whether it is Tito Puente or Nicky Marrero on the
timbales, Eddie Palmieri or Charlie Palmieri on the piano or Ray Barretto
on the congas. Salsa Romantica did not give you The Solo. On this
website and internet radio, you will hear our founding fathers and
mothers of Salsa, who has given us the music, the culture and roots of
Hard Salsa Music.
Many of us hated Salsa when we were younger. We detested the music
of Celia Cruz, Tito Rodriguez, Israel Cachao Lopez, Hector Lavoe, Eddie
Palmieri and so forth. We hated when our parents and grandparents
played them on their phonographs, but we understand now. I would be
first to admit to my grandparents if they were alive today “The music of
their generation was truly the greatest Salsa.”
Here at Hard Salsa Radio, we don’t discriminate whether you’re a Hard
Salsa Band from Russia, China, Europe or even if you’re from planet
mars. If you are from planet Mars and have a swinging Salsa band
submit your demo or promo track, Hard Salsa Radio along with it’s 200
associated DJs, will play it on their radio program. If commercial radio
stations won’t play it, we’ll play it.
Take a look at the right side and left side of this page. You will notice a
red background. It is titled NEW ARTIST SUBMISSION. We call it THE
RED CARPET. At Hardsalsa.com we give new artists the RED CARPET
treatment regardless of the country the artists is from. At the Grammy’s
and The Academy Awards, famous actors and singers are given the Red
Carpet. If the artist demo or promotional song swings off the doors, they
are placed at our RED CARPET.
